Electric customers in Algoma are benefiting from an educational demonstration application of solar power in the city. The community-owned utility installed an array of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels at the utilities’ office on Flora Avenue in 2009. Algoma Utilities installed 14 awning mounted panels, with a total output of 2.7 kilowatts, providing approximately 3,200 kilowatt-hours
of emissions-free electricity each year.
“It is our objective to be a model for the use of renewable energy,” said former General Manager Richard Riederer, “By supporting community-wide renewable projects, Algoma Utilities is illustrating the practical use of renewable energy and enticing customers to do the same.”
A Solar PV system collects energy from sunlight and converts it into electricity, providing renewable, emissions-free energy. These highly visible projects demonstrate the technology, while educating the community on their benefits, operation and performance.
Algoma Utilities pursued various grant opportunities, including funding from its power supplier WPPI Energy, to help fund the purchase and installation of the solar PV systems. The project was contracted through Lake Michigan Wind & Sun of Sturgeon Bay and became operational on January 9, 2009.
"We’re working hard to lead by example,” said Riederer. “The use of renewable energy is a simple step anyone can take to help create a cleaner energy future.”
Algoma Utilities also has undertaken a number of energy efficiency and conservation projects at the utilities office building, including updated heating controls, high efficiency lighting, and occupancy sensors.
